The big picture
Why is the district consolidating schools?
The decision is based on declining enrollment, financial realities, and the need to ensure every student has access to modern facilities, strong academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, and support services. Consolidating schools allows the district to make better use of resources while strengthening the educational experience for all students.
Which schools are consolidating?
Hamilton Elementary and Price Elementary both have aging schools that will be replaced by a new building, constructed on land right beside the current Hamilton Elementary School. E.R. Martin School is being reconfigured to an elementary school (serving students Pre-K through grade 5) and students in grades 6-8 will attend a new Wheatland Middle School, to be constructed across the street from the current building.
Who makes the decision to consolidate schools?
the superintendent and district administration, with input from families, staff, and the community.
When will the consolidation take effect?
The new, consolidated elementary school is scheduled to open to students in 2028. The new Wheatland Middle School is scheduled to open in 2029. Until then, Price and Hamilton students will continue to attend their current buildings. Martin Middle School students will continue to attend Martin.
Student Experience
Where will students go after consolidation?
Students will be reassigned to district schools through the district’s regular boundary process. Many Price and Hamilton students will attend the new consolidated elementary school, but not all. The district regularly reviews attendance zones to ensure schools are balanced, class sizes are optimal, and, whenever possible, neighborhoods are not divided between schools. Families will receive information about school assignments before the new schools open.
Will families have a choice in their child’s school assignment?
Student school assignments are based on attendance zones and available space.
How will this impact class sizes and resources?
The district will monitor enrollment and staffing closely to maintain balanced class sizes and ensure that students have access to high-quality instruction, counseling, and support services.
Will my child still have access to the same programs and services?
Yes. All academic programs, special education services, and extracurricular opportunities will continue at students’ new schools. In some cases, students may gain access to additional programs not previously available.
How will students and families be supported during the transition?
The district will host family information sessions, orientation visits, and meet-and-greet opportunities at the receiving schools. Counselors and staff will provide academic and emotional support to help students adjust successfully.
Teachers & Staff
What happens to teachers and staff?
The district is committed to retaining staff whenever possible. Employees will be reassigned based on certification, staffing needs, and contractual agreements. Some positions may change depending on enrollment and program needs.
Construction & Logistics
What will happen to the old school buildings after consolidation?
The old Hamilton and Wheatland schools will be demolished. The school board will review options for the former Price building, which may include repurposing for district use, community partnerships, or sale.
What will the new school be called?
A name has not yet been chosen for the new school. The school board has a standing committee that considers naming of facilities, and that group will lead the process of naming the new school.
What about transportation?
Bus routes will be updated to provide reliable transportation for all reassigned students. Elementary students are eligible for bus transportation if they live 1.5 miles away from their assigned school. Secondary students are eligible if they live two or more miles away from their assigned school. Transportation is also considered if the walking route to school causes students to cross a busy, congested, and/or dangerous roadway.
